BISC joins Cowes week on award-winning yacht
By Joelle Petersen
The yacht Puma Logic, as crewed by BISC members during 2009 Cowes week, was recently awarded the Royal Ocean Racing Club s (RORC) 2009 Yacht of the Year award. The award recognises consistent performance (according to the RORC website) while introducing a large number of people to the sport at a highly competitive level .
John Metcalf organized the BISC team at Cowes week. Having compared a number of charter companies, he felt that Sailing Logic, the sailing school which owns Puma Logic, offered the best terms based upon proven race record, a pay-by-berth approach, quality instruction and yachts.
When John introduced the event in January 2009 at the BISC Open House, ten members signed up immediately. With so many participants, BISC was able to fill all berths on the yacht Jaguar Logic and two berths on the award-winning Puma Logic. Many of the BISC participants had little or no race experience, but as a sailing school, Sailing Logic coached the participants to the level necessary for the Cowes world-class event.
In addition to many smiles, the BISC racers walked away with the satisfaction of having improved their sailing skills, particularly with the spinnaker handling, in this highly competitive race week.
In fact the week went so well that one BISC member, Brian Ward, has come forward to organise a BISC team for the Cork Week racing with Sailing Logic in July 2010.
